All week the media has been harping on the war on Christmas. No Christmas trees, in the mall. No one says, “Merry Christmas” anymore. Happy Holiday, or Seasons Greeting, is an affront to evangelical Christians. A video has even gone viral, with an ex-evangelical pastor gripping and complaining about a Starbucks’ cup. The cup didn’t have snowflakes, a snowman, or any other secular ornaments, on it.
He claimed they are taking Christ out of Christmas. He laughed about telling Starbucks his name was Merry Christmas. In other words he lied. The last I heard, lying is a sin! What kind of man of God brags about sinning? When is it okay to sin, to get your way? Does he sound like a pastor, or Christian? Or is he some fanatic, trying to get his 15 minutes of fame. It’s no wonder he is an ex-pastor…
Even one of the Presidential candidates jumped on the foolish bandwagon. He declared, “If I am President EVERYONE will be saying “Merry Christmas!” For real? What happened to freedom of speech, and religion? Or freedom of expression, for that matter…
I am a devout Christian, plainly stated and simply proclaimed; and not just on Christmas day. I don’t need a trumped up handle like evangelical, to validate my love for Christ. Or to make my faith real. I am heavily indoctrinated, and happily brainwashed, in my redemptive Savior.
In saying that, let me be clear. No President or law could ever force me give homage to Buddha, Mohammed, or any other prophet, or supposed god. I’m not about to spout, “Happy Hanukkah!” So how does he propose to make non-Christians say Merry Christmas? Certainly not by a formal Declaration, or amendment to the Constitution. Then again, in this political environment you never know. They may try!
Anyway, celebrating Christmas used to be a noble gesture, that is after centuries of December 25th being a paganist holiday. (Google the history). There was a time in history when the Puritans Christians outlaws the celebration, altogether! Anyone caught celebrating Christmas, the birth of Christ, was sentenced to death! (Look it up)
The truth is, Christmas lost its meaning decades ago, to commercialism. We, like sheep, fell prey to their marketing tactics. Black Friday is a perfect example. On that day you can’t tell the ‘saved’ from the ‘unsaved’. We look forward to the gifts, the tree lighting, and of course the parties. Eat, drink, and be merry! But, riddle me this. If it’s Jesus’ birthday why isn’t He invited to His own party? What gift do you have for Him? I’m just saying….
That’s okay though, because there is nowhere in the bible where Jesus asked us to celebrate His birthday. He could care less about what is or isn’t on a Starbucks’ holiday coffee cup. He could care less about a Christmas tree, or the beautiful ornaments. There was only thing He asked us to do, specifically in celebration of Him. Which gets me back to “The CUP!”
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 says: “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. “DO THIS IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME!!”
Trust me people, that is the only celebration, and the only cup, that Jesus cared about…
